  1. Hi!

Why is it that VCD-videos which i'm putting on cd to play on DVD-player play choppy when encoded to mpg using TMPEnc? To make things even stranger, the videos aren't choppy when I add the avi files straight to Nero and let it do the encoding :P. The problem is getting the subtitles to the movie, because i can't use frameserving.

Here are my questions in a nutshell:

-How to add subtitles to avi files without changing the format, so I can add it straight to Nero?
-Why are the videos choppy when encoded to mpg with TMPEnc?
-Why isn't the video choppy when I add the avi straight to Nero?

The first question is my main concern. :P

    1) There probably isn't any such way, if you don't want to re-encode the avi, which would degrade the quality of the movie. AFAIK Nero does not support converting video with adding (hard) subtitles.

    2) I use TMPGEnc all the time and there is no choppiness. If it does not work for you, there can be various reasons - maybe your player just doesn't like it, or you should try different encode settings. As to 3- this is probably just normal.

What I would try - encode with TMPGEnc, then use VCDEasy to make a .bin/cue Video CD image, then use Nero to burn that image. Also, Nero probably encodes to fully Video CD compatible mpeg, maybe you should check if your TMPGEnc encodes are fully compliant. Maybe the bitrate has been too high in your encodes etc. (You did not provide any details in your post, what settings or template did you use).

Hope that helps and you find some solution.

  3. OK, i've used the default templates which are provided in TMPEnc (NTSC, NTSC Film, PAL) and tried various bitrates (from 500 bps to 1000 bps). I'm not sure what a fully compliant encoding is, so maybe someone could enlighten me a bit.
Additionally, if someone knew the specific settings and templates that Nero uses when it encodes avis, they would help me look for working settings in TMPEnc

For full compliance with VCD standard encode with bitrate 1150 kbps/sec.

If you use one of TMPGEncs VCD wizards, you can't go wrong - they produce 100% VCD compatible mpegs. They wont even allow you to change bitrates and stuff, so I'm a little cofused when you say you use a VCD template in TMPGEng, and still being able to fiddle with bitrates?!?
Also, how do you author the TMPGEnc VCD mpegs? Beware of Nero reencoding if you use Nero to author, specially if the mpeg is non-standard!

    /Mats
