    Hi.

I'm in the process of converting a series of 30 VHS tapes to VCD. Would I be able to use the MPEG files from the VCD's to then make DVD-R's? I'd like to make DVD-R's to increase the DVD player run rate from about 2/3's (VCD), to 88%, but I'd rather not have to go through the process of converting from VHS tapes again.

    Thanks.

  2. I believe you will need to convert the mpeg files to mpeg2 files using a tool like tmpgenc. You should create the mpeg2 file into 2 streams (audio and video), and then use Ifoedit to author them. Then you should have DVD compliant files that you can burn to DVD-R.

hold on and wait a minute ..

you can mpeg1 on a dvd but you need to make sure you are rendering to a correct resolution and bit rate and a number of other factors so that the files are compatable for dvd ...

some thing applies to mpeg2 ..

You can put VCD compliant video onto DVD but the audio must be re-encoded to 48Khz sampling rate in order to be DVD compliant.

Do a forum search SVCD2DVD. This is a tool under development that takes VCD or SVCD mpeg's and does the absolute minimum required to make it DVD compliant. I ahvn't tried it myself yet but have heard some good reports on it. Try it, it might be what you need.
