  1. Point me in the right direction. Found a place where I can download some old movies I have been looking for, but, can't figure out the difference between mpeg, avi, full movie, DVD Rip, etc, to know which download to use. Once I get it downloaded, have no idea how to convert the download into usable files to burn. Everytime I think I have an answer, which usually means downloading different software, I just end up more confused. Thanks to other help I have received here, I am able to backup my DVD's to CD-R discs as VCD's, so I have everything I need to do that, and hope I can utilize the same software for these downloaded movie files, but I just need some guidance about the different , what I call extensions.

    Thanks a bunch

Problem here is that anybody can title their file anything they want.....That being said .You would think that "DVD rip" would be the highest quality file....AVI's have good compression ratios...so they look good and are relatively small compared to most files. BUT the take most processing to get the VCD compatable file you want.

Thing is...down load a few mb of the file you want....copy into a dif directory and use TMPG to view the dat file......if its a good clear copy...then you can work with it...if not...dump it and move on.

By the way...I only share in non-standard VCD format...mpeg1 files....but they are all between 650 and 800mb in size....not enough people do that.

  3. MPEG and avi represent specific formats for encoding a movie. For example, mpeg1 is a specific standard of compression for making videos such as vcds. Mpeg2 is another standard of compression which is also used for making videos such as svcd and dvd. Avi uses the mpeg4 standard of compression. The glossary on the left hand side of this web page gives descriptions of each. I believe that full movie means you are getting the entire movie on one file. Most movies you download will be split into two files. A dvd rip means that the movie has been "ripped" (copied) from a dvd. This is generally the best quality movie you can download. Full movies and dvd rips you download will be in either mpeg or avi format. It doesn't matter whether the movie you download is an mpg or avi file, both can be converted to whatever format you like. From the tools section on the left download avicodec and gspot. Use gspot for avi films and avicodec for mpg films. When you download a movie run them through these programs to fins out what kind of codecs they use and whether or not you have them installed on your system. Avicodec will tell you if your mpg file is mpeg1 or mpeg2 as well as resolution, framerate, etc. Once you find out what the film's format is you can use the guides on this webpage to show you how to convert from one format to another. :P
