Most of the guides start off by mentioning making my dvd rom region free.(for dvd ripping and burning) Do I HAVE to do this? And do I have to do it for the burner as well? I ran dvd genie to check my drive, but it says i have an rpc 2 (firmware) meaning I must change the firmware, correct?
The problem is that I can't find new firmware for my drive.
My drive is an Artec DHM G48....can anyone explain this for me?

Really, do I NEED to region free my hardware in order to rip movies. I am not that interested in getting titles from overseas or anything. And the process for doing my particular drive (according to firmware.fr.st) is a major pain in the arse.
I don't want to attempt it, if I just really don't need it thats all. -
No you don't. If your DVDs are just from one region.
Pinnacle Studio 8 and DV home video editing (ver.9 already home) -
Even if you get DVDs from overseas. You will be able to rip them. Just not play them until they are decrypted onto your HardDrive.
