Hi everybody,
I was thinking about buying a samsung dvd-r2000 set top dvd recorder...
Looking a the specs, I saw that the technology it mainly uses is DVD-RAM... I thought -Ram was an old technology
Can anybody explain to me whats the difference between -R and -RAM or point a link where I could get some info ?
Thx and sorry for the crappy english

DVD-R = Write once
DVD-RAM = Eraseable/rewritable 100,000 times (+rw and -rw rewrite 1,000 times)
DVD-R -RW +R +RW = Writing is Sequenchal DVD-RAM is not. Thios makes it able to erase a file and be able to use that space with -rw and +rw you can't you have to format the whole disc to recover space. Basically ram behaves just like a hard drive same type of writing etc... -rw and +rw you can add but you cant erase then use that space without formatting the whole disc.
DVD-RAM Not compatable with very many dvdrom drives or set top players in fact hardly compatable with any.
This is unfortunate because as a rewriteable format it is my favorite, and the best as per convienence, but you get very slim compatability.
My Burner burns -R, and -RAM for backing up, I love ram. Heck I keep a disk in at all times when not burning a DVD-R I put all my downloads there and stuff like that, copiees of the .bmp files I'm usung to author a menu with etc.... Its great like having a removable 4.37 gig harddrive.

Actually with +RW you do not need to erase the entire disk to recover lost space. You can delete a title and add a new title without erasing the disk. I have a Panasonic RAM(E10) and Philips 985 DVD+RW recorder. I prefer the RAM recorder for Record and playback(only in the recorder). The menus are simplier and a much nicer system. The Philips is great if you want to be able to record and play the disk back into another DVD player. Not all Players support +RW(About 60%). For RAM the support really sucks for DVD players(about 2% - US market). I have never seen a -RW recorder but it uses the same VR format as RAM but you will have to erase the disk to recover the space.with -rw and +rw you can't you have to format the whole disc to recover space.
