I'm planing to format my hard drive and install everything from scrach because I have so many codecs and there is no possible way that you can find them and remove them. Also some of them are illegal and they are giving me a lot of trouble like computer crashing etc. Anyways I'm using Windows ME and I was wondering, when I set it again what codes do I really need. I don't whan to download all the junk out there. I know I need XviD, DivX 5.02 and I don't know what else. My main purpose is to make VCDs from AVIs.

A good recommendation is to only install the codecs as they are needed by your files. Get Gspot from the Tools section, test any files that aren't working and only install the codecs as required. This will give a minimum amount of codecs and hopefully no conflicts on your system. It might be a little more time consuming over a "codec pack" but it should be better in the long run.

So you are suggesting that I shouldn't install codec packs like Nimo etc. To tell you the truth I think my computer got screwed up because of that stupid Nimo Pack before that I had as you said only the codecs required to play my movies, and one day I just decided to install Nimo just for the hell of it. And since than I have problems with every single movie.
One more thing that I wanted to ask you. Is there I particular order that you are supposed to install the codecs or no, and when it comes to encoding what operating system you think works better Windows 98 or Windows ME?? I can't decide which one should I install but personally I have had good time with ME until I setup the Nimo Pack. -
You're not the first person to complain about problems after installing Nimo. No particular order for installing the codecs that I know about. I use XP but if you were using ME with no problems then I see no reason to change.
