  1. I have a couple of downloaded divx movies that have backround artifacts due to the compression no doubt. With the help of this site I have used the noise reduction filter, but to no avail. My question is: Would it be better not to use the filter because with it being used the ncoding time jumps up to about 10 hrs for 50 minutes of the movie with no improvement. Thanks for the help.

If it does not help, go ahead and disable it, try a test sample encoding and see if it matters. If it is useless to you, go ahead and disable it, I say.

Filters are a touchy thing - overusing them can degrade the video. As tommyknocker said, if it doesn't help don't use it. When frameserving from Virtualdub you have more filter options than just TMPGenc's noise filter, such as the temporal smoother and the smart smoother, as well as vhs-related filters and so forth. I've had good results with them, but again you have to test each video to see what filters work best, if any. If you're not going to tailor the filters to the video, it's better to not filter at all.

  4. When I am using noise reduction filters in Vdub. will the results show up in the preview window or will I have to wait till the clip is done to see the results. The reason Im asking this is because for some reason Windows media player has been locking up during avi playback. Thanks for all your help!

yes the results show up in the window on the right, but depending on the codec you use and your cpu power virtualdub may not be able to play in realtime, so it won't be completely accurate.

BTW you may want to get some alternative media players - I keep a backup or two for when media player refuses to play a certain file without crashing.

  6. I am using te original codec that the movie was compressed with, and that is divx 4 low motion. My cpu is a pentium 3 866 mhz.

  7. Thorn, what filters in Vdub do you find most helpful, and what settings do you use for noise reduction. The movie Im trying to encode has the most noise during high motion scenes. Any suggestions?
