I have a 600mhz pIII and my motherboard will only support a 1ghz pent III. What benefit would I get If I increase to 1ghz. The price would be $110.

Increased encoding(rendering)speed, but it's not linear:a 1000mhz CPU won't encode twice as fast as a 500mhz CPU.L2 cache and bus speed also affect processing speed.

As MOVIEGEEK says, the increase will not be linear - I'd expect about 40% increase in speed.
I'm not sure about US prices at the moment but, I think that for a little extra $ you could get a new motherboard and processor (if you could keep the RAM, of course....)

You should check out motherboard/cpu combos on www.pricewatch.com
If price is the most important thing you could get a mobo w/ a 1.8mhz celeron for about $120. that certainly would be a significant increase over your 600mhz
