  1. I also posted this in the Apex 1100 W forum, but changed it a little here so disregard if you read it there and replied to there.

After looking at some of the posts, it appears only some specific DVD players will support 99min CDR's......

I, like a dillweed, just purchased a 100 pack of 99 min CDR's. (oh yeah at $45.00, how bad did I get screwed???) When I bought them, the website (allmediaoutlet.com, I think) had a list of the burners compatible with the 99min. cdr media. My burner is listed as a compatible burner for the 99min cdrCyberDrive CW-038D V. 120C 16x12x40, an old geezer drive in todays specs but still works great!!) Oh yeah, my system is a 800Mhz Duron, 256Mhz Ram and 40gig HD. using windows XP.

    Seven questions, plus.............................................. ...............
    1. Does anyone out there have any experience using this media????

    2. Can a 1100W support this media in both SVCD and VCD formats???

Other questions for the smart people in these forums......

    3. Can I use a 99min CDR for SVCD and overburn (up to 1 GB) to make a SVCD?
    4. Can I use a 99 min. CDR for VCD and change the bitrate for a long movie, like over 2 hours (i.e. the Green Mile or The Right stuff) change the bitrate in TMPGne and still get O.K. results...)
    5. Has anyone ever had problems ripping the "Green Mile" to their hard drives? (Couldn't do it, TMPGne wouldn't recongize it as a standard video file....((too big,,,,I don't know))
    6. Can I, or should I use the 99 min CDR's for making a standard VCD format diskm and up the birate when making a VCD or should I just go with the standard VCD Format bitrate (i.e.1150)?
    7. Can I shit my pants if it all the above works.....Just kiddin'.

I'm asking all the video guru's out there, and I would like to thank them, in advance for all the help I've received in the past.
I just spent the $48.00 for the lastest and greatest version of TMPGne, I've always used the free version in the past and I believe it to be the greatest Video encoding software on the internet. If anyone has suggestions, ideas, websites, etc let me know.

    1) I purchased a couple 99 min cdrs from that same site, as well as some 90 min cdrs. Basically, both burners I tried could not burn more than about 90 mins regardless of the media used. Both disks were tested on about 5 dvd players. The 90 min disk played fine on all except on one it cut off about the last minute or so. The 99 min cdrs did not play at all on any of the players. I now exclusively use 90 min cdrs for all of my SVCDs.

    2) Can't comment on that burner, never used it.

    3) You can use 99 min media for VCDs or SVCDs as long as your burner supports the actual media itself. Also, as I suggested above, compatibility on hardware players is not guaranteed. From my experience 90 min cdrs are generally ok, but 99 min cdrs do not work on most players.

    4) At standard VCD settings you will get 90 mins per disk, assuming your burner can burn that much. With any size media you can adjust the bitrate so that the entire movie fits on 1 disk. If you use anything other than the standard 1150k bitrate that VCD requires than you will be making an xvcd (non-standard vcd) and your hardware player may or may not be able to play it. As far as the quality you will get by cramming a 2hr movie onto one disk, well its completely subjective. You may or may not be happy with the quality.

    5) I had no problems with the Green Mile. You were able to rip the vobs to your hard drive ok? You say TMPGenc gives some sort of an error? How are you loading the vobs? The preferred method is to use dvd2avi to create a d2v project file and then load that into TMPGenc. The filesize of the vobs doesn't matter.

    6) It really all depends on your hardware player and how non-standard you are willing to go. But to make a long story short, I am kinda skeptical that your player will even be able to properly play 99 min cdrs. If it does play them, chances are it will not play much farther than 80 mins into the disk anyway.

    7) Sure, but not in my house.

i reguarly use 99 min cdrs, have had no problem on apex 1200. and yes you can get more than 90 mins. for longer movies, you will have to play with the bitrate. longest i did was carlitos way/ scarface on 1 - 99 min cdr. watch able with slight pixelation. using a lite on 24x16x40. also you might want to use easyvcd, has taken everyhting i've thrown @ it . but it has a feature that will calculate the bitrate for you, i use it the most for my dvdrips. as far as buying 99 min cdrs try:

    hope that helps...bloo

I also use CDR-99 for my (x)SVCDs, at least I can boost my bitrate a little bit w/ the extra space. I'm using RITEK CDR-99, had some bad experience w/ Melody brand.

  7. i too have a CyberDrive & HP cd-rw drive, and i purchased some of the compusa 99 minute cd-r's.. on my hp i could write 97 minutes, and on the cyberdrive i could get 98.. i never really used these discs too much.. i made a couple of divx & svcd movies with them.. but i couldnt justify spending that much on cd-r media, getting a slight quality increase, very low compatibility in standalone players, limited compatibility in computer cd/dvd drives.. i've got like 10 of them laying around in shrinkwrap that i'll probably never use.. maybe i can sell them on ebay or keep them as a collectors item for the future ; )
