Usually any media is suitable, though it's advised not to burn at a speed too high.
For instance, I've got a HP-9700i (atapi) and it supports write-speeds upto 16X, though I only get suitable cd's when I'm burning at 8X speed (I've got a fast system though).

    Give it a try.
If many of the medias yous mentioned come out bad, go back to your reseller. Sometimes it happens there come out bad disks from production (one cannot test every disk ).

I use cheap no-name silver cd-r's and never have a problem, but like Betamax I never burn faster than 8X.
