If your DVD player has some difficulty playing back CD-R discs then different brands can have a difference in the reading compatibility.
Also, better quality CD-R discs have a superior top/protective layer and are generally more resistant to wear and tear.

Verbatim and Fuji Film (Manufactured by Taiyo Yuden) are the best brands of CD-R(W) that I've used.

I am more partial to memorex and fuji-film
plus, Best buy always has at least 1 of those brands in the 100 pack with something like an $18 mail in rebate so the whole 100 pack only costs about $7.99 in the end
not bad for a 100 pack!! -
I prefer Fuji Film (made in Japan cd-rs and not Taiwan), Kodak, Sony (made in Japan cd-rs and not Taiwan) or TDK (made in Japan or USA cd-rs and not Taiwan).
Apparently the Sonys, Fujis & TDKs made in Japan are made by Taiyo Yuden. Those made in Taiwan are made by Ritek factories (including TDKs made in Taiwan).
TDKs made in USA are made by TDK factories.
I got this information from frequenting usenet "alt.comp.periphs.cdr"....
I hope this helps.... -
