MAKEMKV...DVD... "Region Mismatched..." error

I have two DVDs (so far) that when I try to use MakeMKV, I get a "Error 'Scsi error - illegal request-media region code is mismatched to logical unit region'." What does this mean and what can I do about it?

I am using Ubuntu 22.04 on a laptop, older DVD external drive, Latest MakeMKV (1.18.4). Other DVDs have worked, but I have ran across two so far that I get this error msg with. Do I need to update firmware for the ext. Drive? (may be difficult as it is a no-name brand so I wouldn't even know where to begin).

Maybe I need to just buy a new ext. player (I do need a blu-ray one anyway...any brand/model suggestions? - I am in the U.S. )

Generally, on a computer only officially licensed DVD player software cares about the region code. Most open source and ripping software ignore it. But some DVD drives compare the region code of the disc and the region code of the drive, and refuse to read the drive if they don't match. You may need a new drive.

Beware that you're limited to changing the drive's region 5 times (and I think the original factory setting counts as one change). After which it will be stuck at the last value.

Not even an issue.... I think the last time I even used this drive was when I was deployed like 20yrs ago...lol. I don't have any plans on needing it to be changed again.

If you use software for flashing an optical drive & make a backup of the original or flashed firmware.
That should give you the amount of times you can change the region back to what it was when the backup was created.

Nero Info tool will give you the region & amount of changes left.
ImgBurn can change the region.

RPC-2 drives generally don't support a true "Region 0". Run sudo regionset /dev/sr0 to check your current region and remaining changes.

If you upgrade to a Blu-ray/UHD drive later, check MakeMKV compatibility before buying. Firmware support can matter, and the MakeMKV community maintains compatibility information for supported models.
