Hi all. I've posted here before and I do x264 encoding and use avisynth + MEGUI. My knowledge is limited but basically I've been doing video encodes for about 10 years.

All of a sudden, when I do automated 2 pass encodes (I previously did single pass) with SMDegrain, the encode hangs/fails after the first pass, or sometimes before the first pass even finishes. The issue only happens when SMDegrain is used. I tried re-installing avisynth and MEGUI, which temporarily fixed the problem but then it came back for some reason.

Just wondering if anyone knows of a stable version of SMDegrain that I could get that shouldn't have issues? I think I'm currently using v3.1.2d (Dogway's mod) but I'm not fully sure. If it helps, the CRC32 Hash value for my SMDegrain.avsi is 7A46D6B0

I'm unsure if it could be related but at some point, maybe around the time this issue started, I attempted to update to the latest version of SMDegrain (I couldn't end up getting it to work) which I heard was quite a bit different to previous ones and had more dependencies which I put in my plugin folder.

After I couldn't get it to work, I used the previous version of SMDegrain I was using

Just double-click on the SMDegrain.avsi and it'll open like a normal AVS; you can then see the version in the intro at the top.

But yes, the one I have is the same. Can't help you with MeGUI though.

  3. Newest version of SMDegrain can be found here: https://github.com/Dogway/Avisynth-Scripts

  4. The problem is not with SMDegrain. Most likely you're running an overclocked CPU and/or RAM. Or you're having some thermal issues. That's exactly the issue. There's nothing in the SMDegrain code that would make it "unstable". But it is incredibly CPU-intensive and if your hardware isn't stable SMDegrain can definitely make it quit - at random times, which is exactly what you're experiencing.

You could be onto something! I completely forgot to mention that I changed to a new CPU around the time this started happening but I can't remember for certain if it happened with my old CPU.

The new CPU definitely does run hotter so it would make sense. I'll adjust my fan speeds to max and see if it fixes it. Although I am still puzzled because encodes only seem to fail when it's a 2 pass and sometimes it happens after only like 30 minutes through the encode (total time to complete an encode can be between 6 - 12 hours depending on what I'm encoding)

The reason I said I'm not sure which version I'm using is because from memory, there were updates to SMDegrain but the version number within the .avsi was not updated.
