    Audacity is good for free. It’s free so beggars can’t be choosers. It’s good though.

    For what it's worth, I will second Audacity followed by Ocenaudio.
    If you need effects, get REAPER, free for 60 days and then $60 dollars for a licence.
    It sounds a lot but think of all the VSTs you could use!
    Audacity and Ocenaudio can also use a few (not all) VST packages.
    I am not sure which few they can take advantage of.
