45 min, VHS quality?

This has probably been asked a million times and answered twice as many times. But...

Can I get 45 minutes of VHS quality on a VCD or SVCD so I can put a standard hour long TV show on a 80 minute CD. Can VCD even be VHS quality?

I have captured shows and converted them to DIXV with 1876 bitrate and I feel that that is acceptable. I hate being tied to the computer as most of us do though. That being said, I have tried so many different templates and capture tips and just can't seem to get a VHS quality VCD or SVCD. When I swap back and forth there is a huge difference in the 2. Don't get me wrong, some of my attempts (like Sefy's templates) have given great results, but still aren't quite VHS quality.

If this is not possible, that is something I will have to deal with. I will have to continue to use DIVX, but what a waste of my great Pioneer player. Enough ranting. Please let me know what you think...

Oh and I have tried many combinations of XVCD, with bitrate's around 2200. I am not a stickler for conformity as my player plays XVCD's and I figure any newer players will almost always incorporate existing technologies, meaning that VCD and SVCD compliance will become a thing of the past. So feel free to post something off the wall, that can get me VHS quality.

From my experience, I can never get VHS quality VCD or SVCD if I start from an VHS tape.

However, from the Hi8 tape or digital tape, I got "beyond VHS quality" for Hi8 and near DVD quality for digital tape for my SVCDs.

The reason is possibly due to the high noise level on the VHS tapes.

I know TMPGenc has a noise filtering feature but it would take forever in my system to encode even one hour of video with that filter on. Maybe this is what you should try first.

I capture my video from Hi8 tapes, and I never can get anything that is equal to VHS quality, its always way below. Can you take throught the steps that you take from capturing the video to encoding to burning. What format do you capture the video in, and what software do you use to capture it. I know this is alot, but it would be greatly appreciated!

heres what i use to make IMO better than VHS xsvcds. i capture at 352x480 or 576 for PAL (sound wierd but vhs res is actually just around that if u count both feilds) i use virtualdub to 'clean' the avi as much ass possible, smooth, then light sharpen, it all depends on the tape, then, encode 3 or 4 pass VBR mpeg2. oh, and make sure to de-interlace.

I have been conveting most of my old vhs tapes to vcd over the last few weeks and have gotten extremely good results provided the original vhs was of good quality (either recorded in SP or bought tapes) I just did a conversion of the miniseries "The 60's" that is a little softer than my dvd rips, but damed near the same quality. I would be happy to post a few megs of the resulting vcd and then if anyone is interested I can tell you what I did (of course, I use an All-In-Wonder, so my you would have to be using an ATI card to use my settings. Any one have a few spare megs of webspace anywhere. 1 minute of video is 10megs. I think I can do that.

You said xsvcd?, so you are leaving it in that resolution in tmpgenc instead of resizing it using the filter in VDub? Could you also describe what other filters you are applying (or what you mean by "clean&quot and the settings in the filter so I could give it a try?

I have a all-in-wonder radeon, so yes I would be interested in your settings also. I am willing to try anything. I bought my card back in November and have yet to convert any of my videos, because I have not come up with the right quality so I can trash the tape afterwords. The only issue is I don't have any server space for your example.

I have tried capturing with both VDub and MMC, but thought VDub would get better quality because of ATI's track record with drivers, I figured their software wouldn't be as good either. But if you found a good solution, feed me and I'll give it a go.

Go use a 80Min CDR and with 2000 kpbs, and burn a SVCD at 480x480. It most likely will fit 45 minutes.

If you record bought tapes (as in movies or what ever) how are you removing the Macrovision The reason I ask is because
I have a few tapes that they DO NOT make DVDs for that I would REALY like to record , cuz they are fadeing slowly worse and worse all the time. I need a software vesion if possable I looked up Macrovisio remover on the web and it came up with a bunch of skimatics for hardware removers
