Hello everyone-I'm ready to run down to Best Buy and get the Sony DRU 500A. I have the ATI MultiMedia Center7.7 DVD player and Nero. Can I use this software with the DRU500A? I'm really looking forward to getting this DVD writer, I would appreciate any feedback from people who have one, especially if your computer is a PIII 800 or thereabouts. Thanks in advance-Ron B

Nero doesn't support it yet but I'm pretty sure they will fix that very soon. http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDnameid=51&Search=Search&list=

What burning software ships with the unit? Is it Sony's version of a major burning program, such as PrimoDVD?
thanksJim -
Just bought the sony dru-500a last weekend. so far, i can only burn with the accompanying software - Veritas RecordNow. I upgraded to RecordNow Max so I could do more advanced burning (i.e. ISOs, VCD) but the Max version won't recognize the drive unless I use the wizard (only simple burning operations in this mode). When I go to Sony's site, they tell me that RecordNow DX will be a free download in November. Until then, it looks like I'm stuck! Very frustrating! Also, does anyone know if Princo DVD-Rs are compatible with the sony dru-500a???? THANKS!

I bought the Sony DRU-500A from Circuit City around 2 weeks ago. I've used the latest version of Nero succesfully with Verbatums and TDK DVD-R's.
I haven't tried any dvd+r media yet. Now i just need some 4x dvd-r media and im set. -
Picked one up a CompUSA this weekend.
It ships with Sonic MyDVD v4.0 for DVD authoring.
I installed that RecordNow software but haven't really touched it...
Comes with some other Veritas stuff for backups, etc... and something
called ArcSoft Showbiz - for movie editing. PowerDVD of course...
Latest version of Nero recognizes the DRU500 but so far I've only burned
a few SVCDs with it. 24X,... pretty fast for a DVD burner...
Nero does't do the authoring as far as I can see... I wonder if I can do that in MyDVD and then burn the files with Nero? Still new to this stuff...
So far I've burned mostly on DVD+RW discs. One that came with it (Sony)
and a TDK Disc I bought.
I've also tried a cheap Compusa DVD-R disc (no problems) and
a TDK DVD-RW disc (also no problems)
I must say I'm kind of surprised with the DVD+RW discs.
They burn really fast and play back perfectly in my Pioneer DVD player.
If they were cheaper I'd just use those exclusively... It's nice to know that
if something goes wrong with the burn you can just record right back onto
the same disc. -
I have not seen this drive at my local circuit city the nearest best buy is 1 1hr & 30min away I checked there too. If they are indeed selling it is it a special order item? And if so what is the price? Thanks Will

Hello-I bought this drive on 10/15 at Best Buy for $350. The employees said the drives were selling as soon as they put them on the shelves. So far the drive works great. Installed on my older computer, no problems. Was able to burn data onto a DVD+RW with Nero, already installed on my system after enabling all system recorders in the Advanced Preferences menu. Apparently, Nero does not fully support the drive yet. I was able to burn videos on a DVD through Ulead Video Studio 6. I downloaded a trial version of the Ulead DVD Movie Factory, seems to have a lot of features of the DVD Plug In with the VS6. I tried MyDVD that came with the drive, got some CSS Protection Warning error messages, I guess I'll give it another try. I want to get into the backup software, some upgrades are not availble until November, there may be some limitations with the multisession DVD recording because of my Win98SE OS.
This is my first DVD writer, I have a lot to learn, but I'm stoked. Ron B -
I traded my Sony DRU120A for a Sony DRU500A.
I *used to* be able to make CD-R's now I can't. Something about nero 5.5.9.14 not supporting it completely. The 120A unit understood nero, why can't the 500A? I'm hearing various successes with TDK media for DVD-R,DVD+R,DVD-RW,DVD+RW making.
Also the DRU120A had to be used in PIO mode only on my dual Athlon MP 1900+ system while formatting the DVD+RW that came with it but the 500a seems to do everything in DMA mode 2. -
Hi there
Nero Burning ROM v 5.5.9.14 Support DRU500A DVD Writer.
Eventhough it doesnt list on the website.
I am using Dazzle DVD Complete 2.4 Standard to build DVD Image file.
Then rename the DVD Image file "Filename.UDI" to "Filename.ISO".
Use Nero to burn the ISO image with DVD-R / DVD+RW disc.
It works great.
Evilman
p.s. Neither PrimoDVD 2.0 or RecordNow Max 4.1 doesnt reconize DRU500A because of the "PxEngine.dll".
Until now version 1.1.358 doesnt support it.
The Px Engine update
Release date: October 16, 2002
Version: 1.1.358
File size: 677KB -
Does it burn PS2/Xbox games?
*pardon my english, I dont take the time to type right.*

go to my computer and find the drive, the click one and right click on it. Go to properties and go to the far right tab.
It should have an option about cd burning.
Make sure that is checked. If it isn't checked, windows is probally looking at is as a DVD-RW only.
