  1. Hi,
I have a laptop and want to use the Sony DRU500A.
Can any one suggest if it is possible to use the Firewire/USB2.0 enclosures to convert Sony DRU500A to an external drive?
If any one has been successful let me know.
Any news of an external DVD±RW.
    Thanks,
    Shankar.

  2. I did it with an HP 200i, and plan to do it with my Sony when it arrives (I already have the box). Common thought is to stick with the Oxford chipset in the case.

  3. So what is good about Oxford chipset.
Where did you buy it and for how much?
Did you have any problem with transferring large (4.3GB) data via the firewire/usb2?
    Shankar.

External drives tend to cost more.

Also you can use the drive house for other things besides dvd burner

  6. I don't know why the oxford chipset is so great, just that many people said THAT's the one to make sure you get.

The one I used worked great with laptop and desktop, burned over 4GB. It was a combo firewire/USB2.0 model, and I'm not sure if it WAS an oxford one. The new one I just got IS oxford, but is firewire only. Both of these models were about $60 US.

  8. I have a Labtop and freaked out at first thinking I would have a problem running all my toys through it, but I havent had any problems.

I have a Inspiron 4100 with an ADS drive kit with a Pioneer 104 in it, works fine

You can get drive kits anywhere. I think I bought mine from bestbuy

Oxford 911 is one of the fastest (if not the fastest) firewire bridge chip in existence. This is completely irrelevant for DVD burners however, since the data transfer rate doesn't even come close to maxing out slower chipsets.

OTOH, the Oxford 911 is a common chipset too, so maybe that means higher compatibility too, but for the record my non-Oxford firewire devices also work as well as my Oxford ones in terms of compatibility.

  11. Make sure if you want to make your SONY DRU500a external with a firewire case. You make sure it has the latest OXFORD 911 Chipset.

If you buy a ADS Pyro Drive Kit make sure its the one that has a half circle top. and its not the semitransparent one.

The older cases hve the Oxford 900 (Usually come with 3 Firewire Plugs) That old chipset will not work with the SONY DRU-500a..

You need the new ADS case.
