    i have a new youtubedl install on this machine, up to date I mean, and it gives me a certificate verify error on an attempted download.

    That was a fairly nasty sort of site but on good old reputable youtube it also fails but this time with ERROR: unable to download video data: [SSL: DECRYPTION_FAILED_OR_BAD_RECORD_MAC] decryption failed or bad record mac (_ssl.c:1748)

    Is there something I can do?

    Try adding --no-check-certificate to the commandline
