  1. Hi all,

I've been copying a bunch of DVDs onto my hard drive and converting them into easily manageable .mkv files with the help of Makemkv. However, I have a few disks giving me trouble, so I've used the program Isobuster to recover the files. The program has been successful in getting the files recovered, however, when I play the recovered folder in vlc player, I'm not able to seek through the whole video, the time counter is messed up, and I get an error message reading "Your input can't be opened" (see screenshot).

Also, when I load this recovered folder into Makemkv, I can't seem to find the "video_ts.ifo" file like I am with other working video_ts folders I've copied from working disks. Any ideas as to what is going on?

I also want to preface that I am a major newbie on anything relating to this, so if you could explain things in laymen's terms as much as possible it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

are these DVDs store bought DVDs or home made DVDs ??
you might try cleaning the discs that are giving you trouble to see that helps.

They are homemade disks of recordings from my old dvd recorder. They should have all been finalized, but apparently not so my computer can readily read them. Cleaning the disks doesn't seem to help

It doesn't register at all on my disk drive, which is why I've had to run isobuster to try to recover the files (which I posted in my screenshot in the OP).

can you check the discs in your dvd recorder to see if they are finalized ??

  7. The DVD seems to be defective. Try to copy the complete DVD with Isopuzzle to your computer.
You can also try H2cdimage, a command line program, a bit difficult to use, but often the last hope.

I tried Isopuzzle just now, and it read the following error: "Exit Oxc: Disk is Empty", so that doesn't sound encouraging. At least isobuster was able to find the whole contents of the disk it seems (all 4.11 gb), and if I messed around with seeking through the video in vlc, so it seems the information is there, just not easily accessible and playing nice with makemkv as it should be.

I'll try H2cdimage I guess, but "difficult" doesn't sound like territory I really want to get into if I can help it haha.
