Hey guys this is my first post and I'm hoping someone can help me out here.
I transferred a bunch of old home movies to my laptop a while back but I used rather cheap equipment and the quality was less than stellar. Anyway, I decided to get better stuff and start the process over again so long story short and this happens no matter what program I used I could transfer via composite cables no problem but when I try to do it via s video as soon as i plug it in the screen goes black and I cant do anything but when I plug the other cables back in it works fine again.
Anyone have any ideas? Bad s cable perhaps? Like I said I've tried different programs and I get the same result each time. Thanks for the help in advance!

I'll assume you do have a s-VHS vcr since combo VHS/DVD only output s-video to the DVD side not to the VHS side.
And you have altered the video source in the capture software to s-video.
Now check the pins on the cable. You might have bent one. -
