Does anyone know if there is a free video converter out there? MTS to MOV

Does anyone know if there is a truly free video converter out there to convert MTS to MOV files. I don’t mean “free download” which then asks for money to use... any advice? Thanks

Do you have an OS X or Windows machine that you can use or does the software need to run on your iPad under iOS? Answering my question would determine where those of us who are trying to help should look for a solution.

I'm on a Window system. Want to convert my MTS files into MOV which I will then use on a MAC with Final Cut Pro

mov is just a container. lots of different video/audio can be in it. a mac might not like what a pc creates so i'd let the mac convert it. if the mac doesn't like the mts i'd convert it to a lossless avi to import into fcp not a mov.

No, for a Mac, you want a Mov.

If this is an old Mac (aka QT 7.x era), depending upon your A&V codecs, you may be able to just do a rewrap (no reencoding).
However, if your codec doesn't have a native QT 7.x equivalent, or more likely if you are using a QT10.x (aka AVfoundation)-era Mac it will 9 times out of 10 force you to re-encode, transcoding usually to h264/AVC or more recently to h265/HEVC.

One thing you said interests me: FCP, not FCX. Pro hasn't been out for a while, but if you do have it, your options for import are probably better.

@aedipuss, btw, rarely if ever is AVI the better container for Macs.

Take a look at shutter encoder. It's ffmpeg based but uses a number of other tools as well. It has some nice rewrapping functions too. (And do donate if you like it.)
