  1. I'm asking this for myself and others who may be wondering: what exactly are menus and chapters ? And what are they uses in (s)vcd disks ?

For example, I spoke to someone today who told me that you can NOT do the kind of complex navigation that is on a DVD on a (S)VCD. According to this person, you cannot have nested menu-driven selection that takes you to different entry points in the video. Is this true ?

If so, what CAN you do ? My application is mainly for home videos that I want to distribute to parents and friends (not commercial movies). So, I want them to be able to see a list of many clips that they can navigate and jump to what they want to see.

In the software that I have, if I create many chapters, some of them are off the bottom of the screen and I cannot seem to use the navigate buttons (down, left, rt, ..) to get to them. I have to use the # keys.

What I want is a set of thumbnail images with brief text under them (or something like that) that can be easily navigated (like on a DVD) and jumped to.

Is this even possible on (s)vcd ?

  2. This can be done - use either VCD Imager and one of the 'nice front ends' or VCD Toolbox. I would personally recommend VCD Toolbox although the other is excellent too

  3. Thanks for your reply.
Where can I find VCD Toolbox. I looked all over the web and couldn't locate it.

Also, which one of the "nice front ends" would you recommend. I am a dad with two kids and not a lot of time to figure out the bugs & fixes of shareware. I would prefer something that really works well "out of the box", as they say.
    -thanks

  4. Hi Geoff,

I can not personally say which front end to use in vcd imager (anyone care to assist?) as I have not used any however I have used VCD Toolbox and think it is great - you can get it from here :

    http://www.icdia.org/sw_pc/vcdtools.html

And a tutorial can be found in the Author section on the left of this screen which was done by RF who knows a lot about the toolbox and has been a great help to us all in showing us how to get the best from it.

    cheers
