I've got a couple of videos that I need to add subtitles to because it's spoken in a different language.
At first I want to make it hardsub but hardsub is quite a difficult job for me so I give it up.
I want to make softsub.
However, what's the difference between *.ass and *.srt , and other formats?
1.what is the most common type?
2.any user-friendly free subtitles creator recommended?
3. Is there any possibility that the video is played in different applications or on different devices such that the subtitles is shifted , which is not matching the playtime originally assigned?
Thank you very much for all and best wish to all

what's the difference between *.ass and *.srt , and other formats?
1. .srt
2. Subtitle Edit
3. Most/many software players can use an offset from the original assigned timecodes to synchronize the subtitles. -
As videobruger said a lot of software- (and hardware-, for that matter)-players can do a timeshift on subs.
Maybe a more elegant way to avoid offset problems is to synchronise the subtitles with the video upfront. As Subtitle Edit indeed is good software for creating subtitles, it also has some great tools to sync your subs with video. -
sorry i dun understand. Sychronising the subtiltes with the video upfront? what does that mean?
Yes, I know a lot of software can solve the offset problem but the subtitles are not for myself but my co workers and I have to assume and expect some of them have zero knowledge on computer , so it has to be very user-friendly -
