I'm hooking up an RCN cable drop in my living room for streaming HD video, to a Roku 3 linked to my TV set, for a hard-wired setup.
The Roku 3 manual specifies that I need a router to interface between the cable drop and the Roku 3. But the RCN tech said, No, you just need a cable modem, NOT a router.
So, who is correct?
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays!

Connecting the Roku directly to a cable modem will work (if you're only connecting this one device) but it's a security risk. A cable modem plus a router (in stealth mode) is much safer. The modem's provided most cable companies include both wired and wireless routers.

Thanks for your quick response.
Incidentally, how would I set the parameters for a modem/router if there's no computer that's part of the interface? -
You would need a computer. You might be able to do it via wifi and a phone, depending on the router default settings.

I'm now considering setting up the streaming video option by adding
a wireless router to my PC modem, even though wireless streaming is
less reliable than wired streaming.
RCN wants to double my monthly rate if I use another cable drop. -
I guess because that would mean you have two coax cables coming into your house, with two separate internet connections? Or maybe you can get two separate internet connections over one coax, but I'm not too familiar with cable ISPs.
You are going to need a router of some kind, either an external one or if your modem has a built in one use that one. Paying double is pointless unless you need the extra bandwidth it might provide, which I doubt. -
