  1. Hi newbie and non-techie here

I've used VDub on and off for quite a while mainly because it has two viewing screens with a slider across the bottom to manually play the video itself which I've found very helpful on many occasions. Unfortunately the old forum is now closed so as I've no idea what what to do, really hoping someone might know of a way to play a downloaded YouTube video that VDub keeps on rejecting saying....

"Couldn't load decompressor for format "XVID" (unknown). VDub requires a video for Windows compatible codec to decompress video. Direct show codecs such as used by Windows Media Player are not suitable."

Very much appreciate any help thanks

You could try ffdshow. It works well with VD and has a VFW codec for Xvid.

    And welcome to our forums.

Or just install the Xvid Codec.

  4. Wonderful thank you both !!!!

The videos playing fine at the default speed but having problems moving the slider with the mouse slowly and smoothly backwards and forwards as it's out of synch and jerky. Is there an automatic speed control feature for this or a special setting somewhere.... ?

    Thanks again

I use the 'arrow' keys by my numeric pad to on my keyboard to step through a video.
Video editors don't usually play video that smoothly, but they still edit well.
VD has lots of keyboard shortcuts. http://www.keyxl.com/aaa43c8/411/VirtualDub-keyboard-shortcuts.htm

  6. Thanks for the tip about the arrow keys which worked quite well and just about did the job though I'm still none the wiser !

The reason being the local golf pro did a video from behind of my hopeless attempts to hit a ball in a straight line from the tee without hooking or slicing then said play it forwards and backwards and you'll see what I mean....not a chance !!

    Thanks again
