I have an old .avi file i want to cut in half with no compression. I have tried several free programs. The last one was Avidemux.
When I try to create the second half of the clip the resulting video starts a solid 2-3 seconds before my actual cut point. I have tried several different frames nothing works. It always starts at the same place: 2-3 seconds early.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Most free editors like avidemux can only cut at keyframes in copy mode. And the keyframes can be a few seconds a part.
Try change to a video codec/reconvert in avidemux.
And what is the video codec in the avi? You might be able to use a smart editor that only reconverts at the cut. -
In VirtualDub, if the video is using XviD and the XviD codec has been installed, select Video > Smart rendering, then Video > Compression > Xvid.
Make the first selection, save it.
Press the 'Del' key to remove the first part selected then save the second part.
