I have the same model DVD and have no problems with VCD. Have not figured out the SVCD bit yet to my satisfaction.

Get yourself TEMPEnc from the TOOLS section on the left.

Run TEMPEnc, select LOAD, select the VCD compliant template for your region, PAL or NTSC, Open your AVI in the Video Source (the audio part should automatically load, then click the start button.

After it has encoded, which can take some time, burn the MPEG to CDR using either WINONCD or NERO or the deluxe version of EZCD Creator.

Should work for you. Email me if you need further help.

  3. Hi Jukjoint,
I have also a Philips DVD711, and the (S)VCD's all work well.

I use TEMPEnc (or LSX) to convert the AVI to a (S)VCD file (in all cases I use the standard).

The I burn it with Nero (again standard (S)VCD).

Can you play the VCD's on your computer? If yes then it might be the CD-laser in your DVD that is broken.

I think the 711 uses the second laser only for CD-R and CD-RW, so just try if it plays any Cd-Audio on CD-R. If it does, then try encoding with the VCD(PAL)-Template in TMPEGENC. The 711 (like all other Philips-DVD-Players) does not like anything outside the specification of the white book VCD. If your Bitrate is too high, it probably plays "stuttering" video, but it will play something. Try burning the VCD with WinOnCD 3.8, this will work.
