    Hi

My problem requires a lengthy explanation, so please bear with me. I've been ripping a few Barbie dvd's, and they all play perfectly on my pc. However, when I copy them to a flash drive, they stop at random places. I've ripped one of the offending dvd's again, and it did it again, yet in a different spot. And still, the same movie plays perfectly on my pc.

I've been using WinxDVD Ripper Platinum and my settings for each one is:

    Resolution: 640x480
    Video Codec: Divx
    Bitrate: 2000kbps
    Audio codec: mp3
    Sample rate: 44100
    Bit rate: 160

Appreciate any help on this frustrating problem!

    Hmm....

Have you tried using the same ripped file on a powered usb drive? If you are playing these on a bluray player or something like that it might not have enough power to play video files properly off a flash drive. However if this is off of your computer there shouldn't be an issue.

Have you recopied the offending file off the flash drive and back to the computer to see if it is indeed not faulty?

Stop using WinxDVD Ripper....and stop converting to Divx/Xvid.

  4. Could you tell us the model of the dvd player?
Maybe it's something simple like your player prefers 48Khz audio.
What size is the DivX file you produced?

Thanx Yoda313! I haven't no, but I did burn them to dvd once, and the same thing happened. My player is a normal cheap dvd player with a usb port. Got two of them in the house and both did the same. Busy copying more to the flash so I can test again. If it does indeed happen again, I will try your idea of copying back to the pc

Forgot to mention that they are in avi format.

The sizes obviously differ per movie, but the two that I have so far identified as problematic are quite large. 1.28gb and 1.35gb respectively.

  7. The size should be fine. hech54 could be right. Try converting with avi.NET

It was more common when Divx/DVD players first hit the market. I haven't heard of one in quite a while though. Still, it's something to check out.

The problem could also be GMC or possible QPel. Make sure the video isn't encoded with those features.

  12. Yeah. I've heard of problems with some players with files over 2GB and others over 4GB.

they stop while being played From the flash drive connected to the dvd player
what about the flash drive connected to the PC

what are spec's on the flash drive, it might not have transfer rate fast enough for the video

or IF its an SDHC flash drive, it might not be compatible with the read specs of the DVD player

i recently had a friend trying to use a SDHC memory card in an older digital camera, it would not work correctly, it would not save the pictures
and he could Not reformat the card
he went to the store an bought a smaller slower card, and it works perfectly

Thanx so much! I am learning new things all the time!! In actual fact, I decided to try something backwards and it amazingly worked! I ripped the dvd in mpeg4 format in WinXDVD and then converted it to avi using Any DVD Converter. Transferred it to usb and it WORKED!! I did however notice, that it's considerably smaller than when I first ripped it in avi format, which could also be the difference. First time it was 1.35gb and now after converting it, it's 523MB. Going to test more theories on this, but your advice has been invaluable!!

Oh and @theewizard: playing them on the pc, via the flash is perfectly fine too. So clearly the problem comes in from the actual dvd player's side

    Thanx again!

We have an LG DVD Player that only has a USB 1.1 port so high action movies or movies with a lot of fast action slows the playback down. So it 'may' be a data transfer issue while the DVD player is trying to read data from your USB drive and also trying to read the compressed video file, especially if its a heavy compression method or a slow USB drive

Could you not try a USB hard drive if you have one. They are very cheap now for silly sizes and you'll get a lot more movies on it plus will have faster trasnfer rates. If you want to try that, just make sure you get one that is powered by a SINGLE USB slot. A lot need two USB slots as the hard drives take so much power one USB port can't supply enough power

I have a tiny external 2.5" 250GB USB drive that runs off a single USB port without any issues at all, but a friend at work has one that NEEDS two USB ports or will not even start up. And is huge compared to mine

Thanx Steptoe! I am not sure what the port is, but there is only one, and the make is GemSound. It was one of those cheapies, that usually play everything , and my hubby was looking for one with a USB port. If I am understanding you correctly, I think it's the video data that's just too much to handle. Like I mentioned this morning, I made the one movie MUCH smaller, and it worked perfectly.

I do have an external drive, but it's 750GB and a bit temperamental (one of the first to ever come out), and hasn't worked on any of our players before. I think my hubby has another one from work, which I might borrow to test .

    xx

I just want to point out that the OP was using a bit rate of 2000 Mbps and when Divx/Xvid playback first hit the market in DVD players, some players were known to choke on bit rates that high. The OP's post #15 suggests that this may be the cause.

Thanx jman98! I have since tested a few more times and managed to rip one perfectly with a change of bitrate from 2000 to 1500, and the codec from divx to xvid. And it still worked fine with a larger resolution. So I think I now have this waxed

    Sincerely appreciate all the advice!!

    xx
