  1. Howdy folks,

Just entered into the world of (S)VCD, and while I read as much as I can find (this site has been a godsend with information), I haven't been able to find a thread on CD burners that are "best" for burning (S)VCD.

I currently have a Plextor PX-W12432Ti that has been working well for the past three years and has just now started giving me problems. So... I'm looking for a replacement, and was wondering what you all use and recommend.

Primarily, I'll be burning SVCD to cheap (bulk) CD-R media. I also will be doing a bit of authoring private videos to SVCD.

I assume, but I'm not sure with the advancements made lately, that SCSI is still the way to go?

Anyway, thanks in advance for any suggestions!

  4. You might as well ask who makes the best chili (lol),seriously though look for overburn, underrun protection and large buffer features. it's the way you capture, author and what media brand you use that makes a differance. As far as media goes Verbatim,Memorex and
Fuji are exellent brands,I haven't had good luck with off-brand spindled cd-r's.

  5. I agree with the bulk media problems and Buffer underrun protection.

As for SCSI, I for one do not believe the 3x or better price differential is justified.

  6. Thanks all for the replies. I prefer SCSI for the simple reason that it runs on a seperate bus. I have had zero problems with buffer underrun since I started using SCSI years ago. My DVD player, CD reader and burner are all SCSI. I can even be encoding and ripping while burning.

My main reason for asking the question was if, like in audio, some manufacturers have a better reputation than others, and what you all use.

Anyway, I think I'll just get the latest that Plextor has to offer in a SCSI.

    Thanks!

Bought the Plextor 40x12x40 yesterday and after trying it out with Nero I seem to have the following problem:

Trying to burn an MPEG file that's way over the 80 min limit (950MB) - but the media is a 99 min CD so it should work fine

Nero reports that the available space is 703MB.

I've read up on this and some sources say it's a problem with the CD media and others say it's the firmware (I've got the latest update 1.02).

Just thought I'd highlight my experiences of one of the latest Plextors.

If anyone has any solutions on this issue I'd welcome them.

    Thanks,

It's probably Nero, I have no problems with overburn, have you set Nero up for overburn ?

  9. I see no mention of that drive's compatibility with 99min media on Plextor's website. Are you sure it supports 99min media?

Yep, I've set up Nero for Overburn but the problem seems to be before that.

It's where I run Recorder->Medium Info that it is reported that there's only 703MB on my 99min CD. Shouldn't it say higher than that?

I'm going to try out the media on a few other writers and get back with the results. I could be barking up the wrong tree though.

Over burn is over burn, 80 Min overburn can be anything untill it slips off the end
