is it possible to play videos/movies stored on an external hard drive ( of 160 GB capacity) to a tablet through its usb? the tablet is of one GB RAM and 4GB of storage.

no tablets don't have usb controller chipsets. they are passive usb devices like the hard drive. more than likely you can stream the video to the tablet over wifi if the drive is shared on your network. otherwise copy them to a microsd card that most tablets have a slot for.

On my generic android I can play video from a USB flash drive connected to the tablet, through the OTG (on the go) USB cable.
