  1. I'm trying to play an MKV file whose resolution is 1280x880 on my LG BD630 bluray player. However, it doesn't seem to be able to understand this aspect ratio! The original aspect ratio of the film is 2.20:1.

With the BD player set to "16:9 Original" and my 1080p HDTV set to "Just Scan", the video appears squished into a 4:3 box in the center of the screen. Set to anything else, the image is stretched vertically to fill the screen.

How do I get it to display in the correct aspect ratio with black bars on the bottom and top?

I have tried other mkv files with 1280x800 resolution and they display correctly with black bars on the top and bottom. Is it something to do with the unusual 70mm 2.20:1 aspect ratio (1280x880) that's confusing my bluray player, or something else?

    Thanks!

1280x880 is a 1.45 AR. 1280x720 would be standard 1.78 AR. You need to encode to a standard AR.

As wulf109 pointed out, 2.20:1 is NOT 1280x880. In fact it's so far off that I am amazed that you don't understand that it's wildly incorrect. As far as why some of your crazy 1280x880 files work and some don't, who knows? You're not exactly providing tons of helpful details on how you made these, but I suppose that's to be expected since you don't even realize that your process is completely wrong if it's giving you 1280x880 as output.

    Your post makes sense now.

Follow aedipuss' excellent suggestion and post back info on a file that does play and one that doesn't for comparison.
