  1. I am looking for info on how to transfer movie files I have downloaded from the net, usually in .mpg or .avi format and transferring them to a Cd that my DVD player will recognize. I understand I need to convert the files to mpeg format which program should I use? Why doesn't the DVD player recognize the raw .mpg files? Does the disk need to be formatted in some way other than a simple data disk that my PC recognizes? The files I download are generally 120 - 220 megs and split into two parts. When transferred to VCD format do they need more space than that on a disk and can they be joined? Thanks.

You come to the right place, but such a question requires a lot of explanations, you need to read those guides and come back when there is something you don’t understand or something that gives you a problem.

The VCD's are not standard Data disks, they have to be made with VCD authoring programs like Nero VCD, Easy CD Creator's VCD Creator, or Video Pack 5 etc.

Before you can use the AVI, it needs to be converted to a mpeg 1 fully compliant stream, use TMPGEnc to convert all AVI's to .mpg (Load a VCD template "PAL or NTSC") then click start, the output will produce the correct .mpg for use later.

120 Mb Divx AVI's when converted may produce a 500Mb mpeg 1, if you have 2 of them, your going to exceed the size of the disk, so you will need to use 2 disks. If the size does not exceed the disk, you can join the .mpg files using split merge in TMPGEnc

Before you attempt conversion, you should scan all AVI's for junk frames using Vdub.

Hope this brief intro has helped.

  3. If you choose to download movies in VCD or mpeg format then many Apex DVD players will play the raw file right off of a CD burned as data. My Apex Ad2100 does this well.
