My panasonic bluray dvd recorder DMR BW780 which is 6 months out of warantee has starting making grinding noises when recording DVDs. Do the instructions available on this website for opening up the unit and cleaning the spindle work for this model, or is the drive mechanism in these machines more inaccessible? I mainly uses DVD-RW disks.

I don't have a Panny BD recorder but I'd give cleaning the spindle a try. I need to clean the spindles on all my Panasonic DVDRs probably yearly, just something about how Panasonics hold the disc makes them prone to collecting dust.
