You mean inputs to a dvd authoring program? avi etc?

While some kinds of encoding formats may be better than others, it really depends on the quality of the encoding. I've seen divx that was really good, and really bad mkv.

Some encoding/ripping software isn't that great. It may not have enough options or settings. Or whoever's using it doesn't understand the settings. Or doesn't care that much ... they just want a fast one click answer. DVDfab dvd rips are pretty bad, though I think its BR rips are probably better, at least if you use the high quality (slow speed) setting, which many won't.

File size is a pretty good indication of better quality, but a bigger file may still be badly encoded. I've seen terrible 2Gb movie rips.

Some dvd authoring programs are a lot better then others at resolving sync and other problems caused by bad encoding /bad codecs. avstodvd excels at this if you use 2 pass vbr mode.

However, while I've recommended avstodvd a bunch of times, like many others here, I uninstalled it.

It, like many windows freeware media programs, installs 3rd party codecs / splitters. Then other programs I like much better, like vlc and smplayer, don't work as well.

So off all that hacker crap went. I'm going to stick to Linux ports as much as possible from now on. You can't get away with that sort of thing on Linux/Unix.

No, I'm not going to elaborate on what avi and mpg are. Do a search.

And don't expect much quality from downloaded vids, which I suspect you're dealing with. If the video has bad sync problems or a lot of video artifacts you can't fix it when you burn it to dvd.

If vlc or smplayer can't play it properly, in sync, I doubt you're going to get it to work.

  5. The answers to your questions would require explaining too many concepts that you have not yet done the basic research to allow you to understand the explanation.

For instance, a common cause of audio de-synch is due to VBR audio, which is usually solved by de-muxing to a WAV and re-encode and re-mux, if necessary before Authoring. It would be helpful to understand that your file is an Xvid, not an AVI, though it really is an AVI, except in any useful sense. See what I mean?

Ten to twenty minutes of reading on your part will allow you to ask much more direct questions, and get you to your goal much more efficiently.

Which you ain't going to find on torrent sites.

rbcc, it's clear you either don't read the posts here by more knowledgeable people (others a lot more so than I), are one of those people who can't be bothered to do the most basic reading on your own and think forums are free tech support, or are just plain thick.

He didn't specify torrents. For torrents the answer is full blu-ray rips.

Thing is, I've gotten movies from all kinds of places/people, created my own, done complicated editing, etc., and I RARELY have problems with sync. Something must be seriously wrong with the OP's material, setup or methods for this to be such an issue.
