  1. I have a WDTV that is working fine when connected to any of my TVs, but when I connect it to my Onkyo 605 receiver, it doesn't output sound throught the hdmi. Haven't tried optical though. The receiver just displays a No Signal message on its screen. It dispays this message even if I'm just in the WDTV's menu. I tried different hdmi cables and it's still the same. The WDTV has the latest firmware version.

    What's wrong with my WDTV?

Are you sure the HDMI audio input is selected with the receiver? If the HDMI audio works with TVs, then that would suggest the receiver is the problem. If none of that works, a optical cable might be the easy fix. It would be the same audio signal as the HDMI has.

I don't use the HDMI audio with my WDTV Live, just the optical, and I convert that to coaxial for my receiver.

    And welcome to our forums.

  3. According to this you need the optical connection for DTS

I have WD HDTV, not Live. But it's the gen1. Doesn't even have the DTS downmix. I have to manually encode to AC3 or whatever.

The earlier WD players support DTS perfectly fine. The can pass it out as in bitstream mode. You just need a receiver that it capable of decoding DTS for you. Even the first generation WDTV, which I own, can do this.

As far as DTS downmix goes, the guy who wrote that blog is an idiot. I've never heard of ANY player that does a live conversion of DTS to AC3 or 2 channel stereo. I suppose that such is theoretically possible, but it would kick the crap out of the processor to do that on the fly so I don't see it happening. I could be wrong I guess but I think he seriously misunderstands how Popcorn Hour works. I don't have one but I thought it just didn't play DTS at all - end of story. I don't know where this idea comes from that it "downmixes" on the fly. DTS uses a pretty high bit rate and converting it on the fly is non-trivial.

I only run my old WDTV via optical to my receiver as my receiver has no HDMI inputs. I can tell you that optical output works fine. Since I have no way to test HDMI audio out, I cannot comment on whether there is or is not an issue with DTS and HDMI.

You sure your Onkyo INPUT is set for HDMI Audio?

Does that Onkyo input work with other devices ON HDMI - IE DVD Players etc?

If the above doesn't work try to reflash with stock firmware or even try this http://forum.wdlxtv.com/

    Hope this helps

  6. @jman98 DTS downmix is a feature of the 2nd gen WD set top boxes. If you go to WD site you can verify it for yourself. It's not the only device that has the capacity to process DTS for those who don't have DTS capable audio equipment. All that being said, it ain't gonna' play over the HDMI connections since it doesn't have downmix. The end. period.

His receiver is very capable of handling Bitstream etc...........http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?class=Receiver&m=TX-SR605&p=i

  8. My Onkyo works fine. It has sound from other HDMI devices. It's only with the WDTV that it doesn't output sound.

I tried using optical cable for the sound and it now has sound from the WDTV.

So what's wrong with the HDMI of WDTV?
