    Hi all,
Here's something that's been annoying me for longer than I can recall, so I thought I'd finally ask how to resolve it.
I tend to use VDub to edit video and I don't typically run into any problems. However, sometimes I'll need to make a cut that isn't on a key frame and when I do so and save, the playback appears as if I hadn't made the edit in the manner that I did.
How do I make cuts and have the video properly save (and therefore play back) the video if the cuts I made aren't on key frames?
    Thanks

Do you have 'Smart Rendering' turned on in VD? That should solve the problem.

Highly compressed video formats like Divx,XviD, H.264 have widely spaced keyframes (I frames). Divx by default uses about a 300 frame I frame spacing. Cutting other than on a keyframe requires a re-encode to prevent sync issues and image breakup. Smart Rendering just re-encodes at the cut point.

So I should have "Smart Rendering" turned on, using a direct stream copy? I tried that and it did fix the problem with the end of the video and the middle (though it left one frame in), the beginning still seems to be remain as it was, despite my cutting it

Wait, obviously a direct stream copy would make no sense in this case. I did try using smart rendering with a fast recompress but VDub just hangs while saving. When I cancel and view how far the encoding went, it shows that it only made it to the middle of the video, where I had cut it *scratches head*

  5. Did you set up the compression codec?

Yep. I went with XviD, as that's the one it was originally compressed with.

  7. It always works for me. I set Xvid to single pass target quantizer.

  9. If your files don't use packed bitstream try remuxing with packed bitstream with Mpeg4Modifier.
