I'm using Handbrake to transcode an h.264 mp4 file with 5.1 AAC audio to XviD with MP3 audio. Under audio and subtitles > source, i choose "Unknown (AAC)", i also tried "Automatic". But both times it encodes video only, with no audio track. Any ideas on what i'm doing wrong?

Cause it doesn't support it. Try something newer like xmedia recode, winff, avidemux. Handbrake 0.9.4 and newer doesn't make xvid.

But it has an option to encode using it. So it can encode using AAC but not READ actual AAC?

That's an obsolete version of Handbrake that you're using. It probably can't read the 5.1 aac.
    The current version is 0.9.5.
This will encode mpeg4 video and mp3 audio in mp4 container. You stand a better chance using this version.

Right. Thanks for the responses. And the avidemux heads up.
