  1. I have been wondering for a while now whether or not DVD shrink alters the video quality of the output files when "no compression" is selected.

Sometimes it is quick and convenient to simply use DVDshrink to add multiple dvd segments on a single disc. I always select "no compression", so I would assume that means that the vobs are simply being copied with no compression added. But I've always wondered because even when no compression is selected, the preview window still shows the video as if it's being processed.

I usually use the last version, 3.2. Though sometimes I use the older 2.3 because it had the ability to trim and cut. That version also has a selection for "no compression" under compression settings.

So do both of those versions actually copy the files losslessly or does it apply some type of compression anyways when it says "encoding"? It seems to work awful quickly when I select no compression, it seems it doesn't have enough time to re-encode, but I wanted to double check.

  2. I have the last version 3.2 and it "trims & cuts" just fine! And "no compression" means just that = lossless copy!

Just wondering, is your "3.2" downloaded from here (videohelp) or somewhere else? Because always download your video software through videohelp, because it is always up-to-date and is trsutworthy channels!

You would have to check the default preferences in DVD Shrink. There may be some things checked that make minor changes in the structure of the DVD that have no affect on the actual video or it's quality. That may be what Shrink is doing. You could also check the size of the original VIDEO_TS folder and the outputted VIDEO_TS folder and see if that differs significantly.

And if you are adding multiple DVD segments, then they have to be renumbered/renamed to fit properly within the DVD structure and that may be what it's doing.

Even if I do a no compression copy, I usually get rid of the warnings, previews and maybe extra subs, audio tracks, etc., and that does change the overall size. If I wanted all that crap, I wouldn't need Shrink in the first place.

  5. Yeah, I do the same thing with getting rid of warnings, previews, etc. - as long as the video quality itself is left untouched, I'm happy.

I don't remember where I got the 3.2 version of DVDshrink, but I remember it was a tech forum because it was an altered version that provided burning support with imageburn since DVDshrink seems to not be compatible with newer versions of Nero and can't recognize that Nero is installed. But I'll definitely come here first for all my burning/conversion needs.

And boy do I feel stupid - I never realized that 3.2 still has the trim feature. Just found it. I always wondered why 3.2 got rid of it, it seemed like such a useful feature.

    Thanks for the replies.

We also host a version of DVD Shrink that uses ImgBurn in our Tools section.
