I have an old epson R300 I use to print dvd label. However this series is no longer sold by epson. If/when it dies, what is the best replacement?
I'm guessing that from epson, the artisan 50 would be the closest replacement.
Some suggest using canon pixma printer and buy the dvd tray elsewhere.
What are the pros and cons between epson and canon printers? I have no experience with canon dvd printers.

For US buyers, the firmware has to be changed in the Canon printer and a tray purchased on eBay.
The Canon uses dye based inks and turns out a decent print on disk.
If you are close to the Canadian border, the Canadian version is print ready including the tray.

last i checked there weren't any current canons that could be converted to cd/dvd printing in the u.s. i use an old canon ip4000 series but those was about the last ones that could be hacked, except maybe the pro9000 .
[edit] make that the pro9000 mark II that can be made to work.Last edited by aedipuss; 7th Sep 2010 at 11:57.

I've been using the Canon ip4500 for this reason and I'm pleased with it. Do note that Epson owns a patent on printing to discs in the USA and Canon didn't want to license it, so you have to hack your printer to make it work. Here's what you do.
1) Check the list here
http://pixma.ulmb.com/
to be sure that your Canon printer can be hacked to print to discs. The firmware doesn't really have to be changed, at least not in most models. The hack actually just involves setting the printer up as a "European" printer because the European version is allowed to print to discs. This "hack" has no impact on printing documents in the USA by the way.
2) Buy a DVD tray on Ebay.
3) Buy some label printing software if you don't already have any.
The hack is straighforward. I am very anti-Epson. I originally bought an Epson printer and right out of the box it refused to recognize the Epson ink cartridges that came with it. Know what the fix is? You have to replace the printer. I sent it back to Newegg and bought a Canon instead.
I recently replaced my dad's dead Epson printer with a Canon. Note that you will have to uninstall all the Epson programs first as they will keep the Canon software from working. -
I'm using the Epson Artisan 810 and it works very well. They've come down in price recently and are well worth the money!

I just recently replaced my Epson with a Canon ip4700, plus a G-tray from ebay. Followed the instructions from http://pixma.ulmb.com/ and it worked like a charm. (Note: don't autorun the printer installation disc when hooking it up to the computer. After changing settings in the printer's Service Mode, only use that disc as the source of the driver.)
Much, much faster disc printing than my old Epson, and the inkjet cartridges are much cheaper. I don't know why Canon is not willing to pay the Epson royalties for CD/DVD printing and pass the cost onto consumers. I would have paid more--and actually did pay extra just to get the type G tray.
Epson may price their printers affordably, but they are dirtbags when it comes to charging for ink. -
