It seems that when I burn an SVCD, whether it is with Nero, EZCD Creator, VCDImager, whatever, some of them will not fast-forward or reverse in my Philips DVD-711 player. I have already ruled out the media. The problem exists with all types of CD-RW and CD-R, both 650MB and 700MB. The way the problem manifests itself is that if I hold down the button to FF, the disc simply stops playing. Some discs work however. It almost seems that if my disc is (for example) less than 650MB in size burned on a 650MB disc, the FF and reverse works. If I exceed 650MB (and I know you can burn up to about 740MB on a 650MB disc) those features fail to work. Anyone had similar experiences?

Yes my 711 seems to not want to ff/rw VCDs well. I think I have read in the player section of similar results.
I also had some gotchas on the VCDimager demo disk. I didn't write them down but I could if someone was interested. -
read this it may help you both:

Thanks for the info folks. Actually, I don't seem to have problems with VCD's though. My VCD's always FF and RW okay. It is my SVCD's that don't work! This is a very mysterious problem. I created my mpeg2 files by encoding with TMPGEnc, demuxing, and remuxing with bbMPEG.

I have the exact same problem, only I have a Philips DVD712. VCD's work fine (ff/rw is no problem). A short SVCD I made worked fine also. However, when I make a longer SVCD (about 50 minutes) it won't ff/rw.
There are those that say (on this forum and I believe on the doom9 forum) that there's a problem with Philips players for SVCD's over 40 minutes. I hope not.
Maybe they're right. So far I tried many things, including making the scandata.dat, using Nero 5.0 and 5.5, demuxing, remuxing with BBMpeg, using VCDImager to create a scandata.dat but so far no luck. Maybe I-author can help, I'll try that too.
Let me know what you come up with please. -
It`s true!
I have an Philips 751. Every SVCD which is exactly 40 Minutes and under that Limit works fine on FF/RW. But one Second over 40 Minutes it hooks up and goes to the Beginning.
Maybe with the new Firmware 7.22 it`s better, but i don`t know yet, because i didn`t try.

It may still be possible. I just did a succesful test with a 42-minute SVCD movie-part. It played just fine and ff/rw worked also (on my Philips DVD712).
This time I did *not* use BBmpeg to multiplex the file. Maybe BBmpeg does something bad to screw up the SVCD.
I'll have to re-encode because I had an sync-problem in my mpeg. That's why I used BBmpeg. I'm just going to have to solve the sync-problem without using BBmpeg and then try a full-length SVCD.

Replying to my own post:
Well, I'm sorry to say that despite my succesfull test yesterday I still haven't been able to create a longer SVCD that will ff/rw on my Philips. Perhaps the succesfull test was a fluke, or the actual length was shorter than 42 minutes, even though powerdvd reported it as 42 minutes and I specifically cut a longer SVCD down to 42 minutes using Tmpegenc.
This is another strange thing with the SVCD's I created, the reported length is quite erratic, in PowerDVD as well as on my Philips DVD player.
Anyone? -
I have not tested making SVCD's with more than 40 minutes on it but otherwise my Philips DVD711 scans my SVCD's now without any hiccup.
I started to encode using Ligos LSX-LE plugin for Adobe Premiere. The ff and rew magically started to work immediately.
I burn with Nero 5.5.x.x like before so it is the encoded files that made the difference (used TMPG, no scan on 711). -

Auric, could you try your method on a longer SVCD, say 50 minutes? Just lower the bitrate for encoding and see what happens. -
I will do that as soon as I have the time.
Meanwhile I am stunned by the fact that Nero does not create proper scandata.dat information. The player is supposed to use the provided information to calculate the correct length of the track and the remaining playtime of the track and display that information.
Why on earth Nero can't do this? If you feed it with a blank scandata.dat file ff and rew are possible on Yelo 800 but no length of track or remaining playtime can be shown.
What on earth are they thinking at Nero? THis is bad. -
Hey,
The same thing happend to me... I downloaded the newest firmware, and now it works great!

Hi !
I do have the same problem with my Philips DVD 751!
I do have the latest firmware installed!
I encoded a 50 minutes clip with TMPGEnc. Which did NOT work. I cut this file into 2 parts (30+20minutes) and
these files DO WORK if they are burned on seperate CDs.
SO it has nothing to do with the TMPGEnc encoded files.
Anyone who gets a 50 min clip to work on a SVCD in a
Philips DVD Player should kindly report this here!
THANKS
Med.
