Imgburn - Power Calibration Error message

On a SONY VAIO 3.2 GHZ running on XP and Imgburn 2.5.0.0 attempted to burn a DVD. The media is a MEMOREX DVD-R. Got the following error messages:

"INVALID FIELD IN CDB" and

"POWER CALIBRATION ERROR"

Try another disc, if that doesn't work then try better media such as Verbatim.

While you may try another disc or brand the error is a drive failure ...

1: Download SIW, when running, hardware > storage devices ... burner model, name, and firmware is here, search sonys vaio website for any firmware updates for the burner ... it may be that its from another vendor in which case you go to their website and seek updated firmware from them ... reboot after and try another burn

2: Failing 1 then If system is still under warranty ... return for repair (usually drive is replaced)

3: Failing 1 and 2, you will need to purchase a replacement (burner) ... no, not a new laptop

I know this may sound wierd, but I have seen more drives than not only support +r or -r media. so if you are failing with -r media try a +r disc . (i say -r because my drives give me this error with -r's)

You can uncheck the box for "Perform OPC Before Write" in ImgBurn (on the Settings, Write tab). It's not necessary.

My advice would to either follow MOVIEGEEK's advice (use better media - Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden), or replace the burner.

Even if the burner does work fine with better media, you still might consider replacing it with a newer burner, as it's from a different generation than most of the media you're likely to currently run across. As an example, the media you were having a problem with may say "Memorex", but it's actually "RITEKF1" which is 16x media. Your drive, however, has a maximum burn speed of 4x. Burning 16x media even at 4x (the maximum write speed for that burner) isn't going to be optimal. There's also a distinct possibility that the drive is using its' "gamble" write strategy (the drive doesn't know what to do with the newer media, so it's just using its' generic "best guess" write strategy)...which is also not optimal. A newer drive would burn a considerably wider assortment of available media, definitely more quickly, and generally with better quality. A new burner isn't likely to cost much, either.

Of course, it's entirely your decision. As a firm believer in "if it ain't broken, don't fix it", I would completely understand if you would rather continue to use the existing drive...in which case, using something like the 8x Taiyo Yuden disks would be your best bet...or at least try to avoid media rated higher than 8x.
