  1. Does anyone know a way of encoding broadcast quality NTSC to PAL, and visaversa, on a Mac? On PC's it is possible to purchase software (Canopus) that will do high quality conversions, but on Mac's so far nothing I have seen looks good. I work on mac-based NLE's running Avid, Media 100, FCP, Cleaner5 and Quicktime. Any ideas? Thanks. justin@frontierproductions.com

  2. This is a common problem.
    The only soultion to date is to setup a PC. If realtime is not
    important you can even use s/ware on the net that is free for PC's
    providing you frameserve as avi in something other than QT.

    Why not just use Quicktime Pro. You could take your video and export as a Toast Ready Video-CD and use the PAL option. YOu ending product would be a PAL encoded .mpeg.

    I've done this for some clients. inc Canopus

    Mind you, I have always wondered how a good stand alone
    transcoder would assist. As I'm not in the DV field (just computers)
    I'm sure there are problems with this (DV->Analog->TRanscode->DV)
    as otherwise everyone would be doing it [/quote]

    Why not NTSC DV exported to PAL DV via quicktime pro?

  7. Cleaner 5 will do the best job on the Mac. Nothing but a 'proper' hardware based standards converter will do the job to broadcast approval standards.

  8. I have not followed this tread very close, but....
    has anybody simply demux, edited the mpeg header, then re-mux
    if the following is not clear, email me, RNC

    VTS_01_0.mpv mpeg header

    -address- --header id- -A-- -B- CD
    0000000: 00 00 01 B3 2E 01 E0 31 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

    A Horizontal Size in Hex
    16 0 = 352
    1E 0 = 480
    2D0 = 720
    2E 4 = 740

    B Vertical Size in Hex
    0F 0 = 240
    1E 0 = 480

    C Aspect Ratio
    1 = 1:1
    2 = 4:3
    3 = 16:9
    4 = 2.211 (not used in dvd)

    D Frame Rate
    1 = 23.976
    2 = 24
    3 = 25
    4 = 29.97
    5 = 30
    6 = 50
    7 = 59.94
    8 = 60

    I've done something similar on a PC (some problems with hybrid sources) but it works.. but for true broadcast quality? I remember I was not
    100% satisified with the result so I never repeated it except for the
    odd DVD backup
