I'm trying to play a 720p x264 MKV file on an old laptop, which is 1.7GHz Pentium M with 2GB RAM.

VLC and GOM player choke on the video, use 99% CPU.

Is there a faster/more efficient player I could try?

(I tried CoreAVC, which played a BIT smoother, but NO audio.)

I don't want to have to convert the media.

    thanks!

Your CPU is not capable of playing back that file without hardware assistance. Re-encode it down to something much lighter - 720 x nnn Divx or Mpeg-2 would be suitable for that CPU

Like guns1inger said, your cpu spec is too low probably.
There is no much better h264 decoder than CoreAVC. All other decoders (Cyberlink, ffmpeg, Splash...) are very similar, so if coreavc does not playback smooth video then it is time to upgrade hardware.

  4. The Divx 7 (MainConcept) h.264 decoder is reputed to be the most efficient.
