Problems with .VOB files - What converter should I use

I tried avidemux, mp4creator, megui, etc... but as long as I know virtualdub is FAR from the others, because it's the only useable one. The problem is that it will only make .AVI files.

I have problem, got many DVDs to convert from .VOB (and have to use smart INTERLACE filter and smart RESIZE filter in virtualdub) and then convert it to other format.

But how can I do the same procedure with other programs? I need to convert DVDs to MPEG4 H.264, WMV and IPOD. XVID AVI is okay, since VirtualDub makes excellent quality.

1. ) Should I convert .VOB (deinterlaced and resized) to some other RAW AVI in virtualdub, before convert it to H.264, IPOD and WMV?
2. ) What software which is LEGAL and FREE should I use to convert files to WMV?
3. ) What software is LEGAL and FREE for converting to MPEG4 H.264?

Have you tried handbrake or xvid4psp? Just load the dvd/video_Ts folder and choose a profile and convert.
