  1. Hi,

First hello to everyone! I have been using virtualdub for long time, I added MPEG-2 plugins, AC3 plugin, to be able to open .VOB files,

now here comes the question: I never convert any .VOB to .AVI or MPEG4 or something... but I have original DVDs at home, they're dual layer (around 7GB). I copied all .vob files to hard drive and when I try to open it with VirtualDub, it recognizes resolution 720x480...but the picture is not correct it is stretched actually, faces everything.

I don't know why it recognizes movie in 720x480 but when I play it with VLC player...(it doesnt show exactly what is the aspect ratio, but picture is alright, I make one picture from virtualdub and it came to my Paint Shop Pro 720x480, but when I copy it from VirtualDub it is like 720x540...AND THAT ONE IS CORRECT.

It is very strange that my Philips DVD player also stretches movie to fill screen (I have 16:9 TV, but settings are auto...so if TV channel is 4:3 it will show like this and if it is 16:9 it will be in that aspect ratio. All these dvds are still shown in 16:9 actually on TV, and doesnt look good.

1.) Someone please tell me, why VLC player shows correct aspect ratio (4:3 - movie in 720x540) and shows right movie, and why virtualdub shows wrong (720x480)?

2.) There is another big problem with .VOB files on all my DVDs I have. When some movements are in the movie, the picture is like this: (those tiny lines are always when someone moves...almost.

This is my first time when I want to convert this movie, so please let me know about these two questions!

    Thanks

    anamorphic?
check the aspect ratio flag in the vob with GSpot.

    those lines are interlacing

  3. Thanks for reply!

How do I get rid of interlacing?
(I saw same movies on the net without these lines well in diff. format like divx etc.)

Here is the pic of Gspot, I really have no idea, but it looks like movie is 720x480...so it is wrong on DVD! But can I make it right? This picture is also custom made, since it was streched to 720x480.

All full NTSC DVD resolution is 720x480, but playback uses non-square pixels so the video is stretched to 16:9 for wide screen and 4:3 for full screen. I'm not sure how you got the picture you posted. But since it is 640x480, I would assume the original video was probably 720x480 with display aspect ratio 4:3.

Edit: I just looked at the gspot screenshot, which confirms it.

Removing interlacing is more complicated because it depends on the type of interlacing you have, (and one screenshot doesn't tell us enough). If the video originated on film then you should see a 3:2 pattern of interlaced and non-interlaced frames. This can normally be reversed to the original 24 fps framerate with progressive frames with little loss of quality. If the video is interlaced throughout then you need specialized software to analyze the fields and create progressive frames. Depending on the software and content the results will vary from very good to very poor.

  5. Yes, I resized picture in Paint Shop Pro from 720x480 to 640x480, because it looks normal now. I will deinterlace this DVD and then I will be able to convert VOB to some other format, but I will surely resize it to 640x480 from 720x480. What program do you suggest for resizing and converting to H.264 MPEG4?
