Hi, what i want to be able to do is to make a DD5.1 Demo disc, i have several films with a DTS,THX or DD 5.1 audio (and video)demo at the beginning of the film, i would like to know how to remove these demos and then create a disc containing just these demos.
For example the THX cow in a can from Toy Story.
Any help is appreciated.

The basic procedure is to rip the DVDs with these demos and then extract just what you want from the ripped files. Then you author a new DVD with the files you want. However, I want to point out that in the past some DVD players were known to have issues with very small size DVDs. If the total size on the disc was less than 1 GB, the DVD wouldn't play. I've known of people to dump large useless files onto DVDs they made themselves just to get around this problem. I'm not saying it will happen, I'm just warning you that in the past it was a problem with some DVD players.
While I do not recommend it for ripping, especially not if you are ripping DVDs from North America, DVD Shrink is pretty easy to use and I think you could use it to extract the demo segments you want and make a new DVD out of them. DVD Shrink has not been updated in years, so it can't rip some DVDs that use newer copy protection methods. That's why I don't recommend it for ripping. These new copy protection methods are mostly used in North America. -
Thankyou for your quick reply.
I have been having a fiddle with some of the DVD's i have and it turns out that on most of them the part that i wand is actually in its own VOB file. I have discovered that if i rename them .MPG then i can get them to play in windows media player.
So i now have a few files i want to burn back to a working DVD, what is the best (free of course) software to do it with? bearing in mind i need to keep the integrity of the 5.1 soundtrack. Already on my PC was Ulead DVD movie factory but this gives me a burn error when using these VOB files with the extention changed (even when i try to burn to file instead of directly to a blank DVD)
Or is there anything obvious im missing? -
Don't rename them. A VOB container is no the same as the mpg container, and some smarter programs will not be happy with you trying to fool them. Use VOB2MPG to get the MPG file if that is the way you want to go.
If you don't need menus then an alternative would be to use DVD Shrink in re-author mode to compile your compilation.
Remember that not all authoring tools handle DTS audio, and you have to put the DTS clips and the DD5.1 clips in separate titlesets if they only have the one audio track.Read my blog here.

i agree, use DVDShrink to make the job real easy. and you can select exactly which audio track you want, so for instance.. you could play that 'THX cow' sequence in 3 seperate clips, one with 2 ch. stereo, one in 5.1 Dolby, and one in 5.1 DTS. real easy to use!

I think i am getting there slowly, i have now managed to remove the DD trailer from a movie using DVD shrink and burn it to a DVD -RW and it works fine in my DVD player, the next step now is how do i do the same with multiple movies? I cant seem to find a way to extract the file from a DVD then another then anoter etc... and finally burn them all onto 1 DVD.
When i eject the disc DVD shrink removes the files i edited from the previous disk.
To do it just from 1 disk i have been saving a disk image then just burning that, would i need to save them as a file instead? then use some program to put all the files together? -
yes, you can save each one to a file, and then use dvdshrink again to reauthor those files together as one disc. when the files are on your hard drive, you can join multiple discs together, but you can't do it from discs.
