Region 1 vs Region 4

I'm down in Mexico on vacation from California, and bought a Region 4 DVD here.

I tried playing it on a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion dv9700t that has Windows Vista Ultimate and a Matshita BD-CMB UJ-120 optical drive installed in it.

After trying one thing and another I finally got the Region 4 DVD playing and without making an actual Region change. (I'm set at Region 1 and prefer not to make an actual change if it can be avoided.)

I then tried to play it again later but was unable to do it and I couldn't remember what maneuver I used to get it playing the first time.

Does this problem sound familiar to anyone? And does anyone know the work-around?

Use a player that ignores region codes. MPCHC, VLC, KmPlayer...

Use jagabo's method. The only way to do this is to either buy a program that ignores region codes like AnyDVD or install hacked firmware to your DVD drive. jagabo's method is much simpler and easier.

You can just dload and install VLC player to play region 4 dvds for the quickest way. But for me, I am trying to watch dvds thru SPDIF(Digital) sound, but the audio and video are desynced using VLC. Media Player Classic Home Cinema(MPCHC) plays region 1 dvds fine but I guess need to use AnyDVD or DVD43 with MPCHC to get it to play dvds other than Region 2 even tho its a region free player but the dvd-rom is not (I haven't tried this yet).
