I haven't had a problem with using Sefy's classical newbie start to DVD Ripping until I installed 3 new hard drives as raid. Had to reformat my hard drives to do so. Now I'm having a problem with large sound files. I can't open a 2 gig .wav file with out getting "The buffer is not big enough" with windows media player (6.4 and 7+). Try'n to backup Black Adder dvds. If I only use one VOB file at a time I get sound (dvd2avi->TMPGEnc) but when using all 8 VOB's no sound at all (only a flat line in the source range audio.)
Thanks in advance.

Why would you use Raid for ? you must have the OS and the applications supporting it, if not, it's nothing but trouble, it's specific for Servers and not for home PC's.

I download alot from newsfeeds. The Abit KR7A-133 raid M/B makes it easy to setup. It's not the raid that's the issue It's the reformat. I know I should be using 2000 or better as an OS but that's a few pay checks away.
Have you ever ran into the buffer issue? -
So from what you are saying, i'm guessing you are using 98, that's bad.
Either way, i've ran into alot of trouble with Raid, some similiar to yours, and some worse, especialy if one of your drives crashes, you lose ALL data! not just partial, because your data is split on all drives, if one goes, they ALL go.Email me for faster replies!

I am using XP, but still cannot open .wav files large than 2Gb in WMP. If a film is over 180 minutes, I have to cut it and encoding seperatly.
-
Which File System did you use ? FAT32 or NTFS ? I don't know how compatible FAT32 is with Raid, NTFS should work better, and should also be capable of letting you do files larger then 2gb.

I used Fat32 for Windows ME..
What OS is best for RAID? After talking to the desktop guys at work, found out they can hook me up with anything. Would like to switch now while there's nothing on my drives. Need 2 things from the OS, good gaming and easy networking (and the ability to open more then 2gb .wav files.)
Please don't say NT
Thanks again Sefy for your time. -
I won't recommand you an OS, that will be your choosing, if you want files larger then 2gb then get NTFS capable, also make sure you have drivers and updates for your hardware for that OS you will choose.

Yeah, I hear that from alot of people. I still make backups of everything downloaded/created. Just like having a 240gb drive.
Have a great weekend. -
I am using Window XP and NTFS file system. I have captured 20GB DV footage and played no problem. I just have problem to play .wav file from DVD rips that is longer than 180 minutes and larger than 2GB. Have you had problem to rip a movie that is longer than 180 min using DVD2AVI, Tmpgenc?
-
If you mean me.. i'm not sure, I think Titanic was that long, god knows I won't want that movie again

There are good movies like Magnolia and The green mile are over 180 min long and I had problem to rip them as a whole movie.
-
The Green Mile I didn't have any problem with, I did that movie for a friend.

Did you rip the whole movie including the end credits? I used DVD2AVI and tmpgenc. The .wav file was just bit over 2GB, I couldn't play it in WMP. When loaded into Tmpgenc, the audio was just about 10 seconds long and couldn't play at all. I am using Windows XP and P4 1.5GHz cpu.

When I rip a movie, I rip the entire thing, including everything, of course the movie was far too long for one CD, so I encoded it in two parts, but I don't recall any problems with it.

Well, re-installed with NTFS format and W2K and still can't use a .wav file created from DVD2AVI that's over 2GB. TMPGEnc will load it but no sound comes through. I also get a buffer error when opening it.
But I must say I'm happy with W2K. Nice and stable.
Oh well, good thing it's only Black Adder and can be broken down easily. -
UnholyB0b:
Don't assume that a RAID setup is causing your problem.
As long as your not using raid-0 your data is safe and redundant. raid-0 is drive spanning and simply gives you the appearance of having a larger drive.
Raid-1 is mirroring where data is duplicated on a secondary disk(s).
We are talking IDE raid here right ? I assume no raid 5?
Anyway, when setting up for raid this way, it's all in the hardware. As long as your OS of choice has a driver for the controller/chipset your OS could care less about the physical hardware.
Your problem with 2 gig or larger .wav files are known limitations to MickySlop media software. -
Thanks MoovyGuy,
I'll consider this a closed subject.
To answer your question it's an IDE raid-0
