Interesting topic. I think a lot of movies are funnier without the profanity. I saw one of my favorite movies (The Big Lebowski) on TV a couple of weeks ago. If you haven't seen it, I don't think it goes more than twenty seconds at a time without the 'F' word. This version was dubbed with classic lines like 'I'm gonna cut you up Lebowski' and 'This is what happens when you kiss a stranger on the ear'....

You should see the Network TV version of "Casino". It's only ten minutes long!

I have seen movies with curses. And not just fantasy movies.

"Gol darn you to heck" (bowdlerized since I am not sure about the language rules- and yes I just read them)IS a curse. Well if you believe in Hell anyway. To me Hel is a town in Scandinavia - in the winter that might still count as a curse.

  5. To the OP:
How about Andromeda Strain as an in class movie? Made for TV in the 1970s so it's very sanitary for modern viewing consumption. Shows much of what Outbreak is trying to show and chances are the kids have never seen it. Acting is pretty good, but it does suffer from the 1970s slow paceing.

"Damn you", "Go to hell" are literally curses. You haven't noticed these? They're probably considered so mild these days as to not be notable.

In Chinese they are still considered pretty strong and offensive.

And I think shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and more recently Supernatural would have had quite a few full on explicit curses.

And on an side, the opening scene of Four Weddings and a Funeral begins with :

    "F*** F*** F***!"
But seeing it on TV a while later, that had been edited to "B***** B***** B*****!".
Which says very strange things about which sexual acts are thought less offensive.

Blue Velvet on TV was a frikkin' joke back in the day. Now we would get it uncut on FTA.

It's not instructional. It's a cinematic work of fiction, and it isn't itself being studied. It's being shown for a little fun at the end of term. That's why I think it's a public performance.
Actually, you can show anything in a classroom and it can be considered "for educational purposes". The mere fact that it's in a classroom is good enough. I used to be a teacher, and believe me, we really had to research this stuff well beyond the "everybody does it".

As far as this being a legal forum, sometimes it has to be. If advice or instruction is given that is illegal, it could get this site shut down. There is a fine line between Fair Use and legal on this site as it is, so it helps a bit when people point out when the line is crossed.
