mkv convertion help for a Dummie

HELP ME! ok well let me start i download anime burn it for lter use to watch so dont have to go look it up drownlad it again. any i just bought a new dvd player and it plays everything and anything the problem is i have mkv file and cant convert them. i just got a new comp and bought nero software just for the downloading and burning but i am not smart enough to convert i have been on so many forums reading about it and trying there way i can do it i either mess up something or im just dumb, im leaning toward dumb. any way my dvd play supports xvid and i burn with divx player havent tried it with nero yet. i want to convert to avi but im pretty sure my dvd player will play xvid,mp4 and mp3 not sure what else there is.


if anyone out there can help me that would be great i mean and please make the instruction as simple as possisible i have been trying to convert dozens in files but i am getting nowhere so please HELP ME.

convertxtodvd and convert to dvd or alltoavi and convert to avi xvid.

i have tried those and still no luck i get an error with alltoavi and convertxtodvd when i try to convert mkv i get a error saying that i dont have a video to window codec a (vfw).
